Tao-Chang, violin
Tao-Chang Yu came to the United States from his native Taiwan on full scholarship to study
at the Peabody Preparatory and later at the Peabody Conservatory. He has studied with some
of the great violinists and pedagogues of our time including Ben Senofsky, Sylvia Rosenberg,
Victor Danchenko, and Daniel Heifetz. He has won prizes at the Taipei International Violin
Competition, the Taiwan National Violin Competition, the American Young Artists Competition,
and the Marbury Violin Competition.
Mr. Yu received the Lou Becker prize for outstanding violinist from the University of
Maryland where he is completing his doctoral degree. He is eagerly sought after as a
recitalist, soloist, and chamber musician, and has taught widely in both the United States
and his native Taiwan.
Seljuk Kardan, viola
Sel Kardan attended the Peabody Conservatory where he studied violin with Daniel Heifetz and
Sylvia Rosenberg and viola with Paul Coletti and Victoria Chiang. He actively performs
throughout North America and Europe as a recitalist and chamber musician. Mr. Kardan is a faculty
member at the Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia, the Peabody Preparatory, and the
International School for Musical Arts in Ontario, Canada. He has appeared at music festivals in
Niagara Falls, Perry Sound, Victoria, Aspen, Banff, and Schleswig-Holstein, among others. Mr.
Kardan has been instrumental in the development of the Heifetz Institute and currently serves as
its Executive Director.
Lucasz Szyrner, cello
Lukasz Szyrner studied in his native Poland and in Germany, before coming to the United
States where he studied at the Peabody Conservatory with Stephen Kates, and the New England
Conservatory with Lawrence Lesser. He has concertized throughout Europe and the United
States as a soloist and chamber musician and has won prizes in international competitions,
such as top prize in the Irving Klein Competition in San Francisco, UNESCO Competition for
Young Musicians in Bratislava, Shovatie, and the D'Angelo Competition.
Mr. Szyrner has recorded a CD for the Swedish label "Chamber Sound" and has participated
in summer festivals such as the Ravinia Festival and the Piatigorsky Seminar for cellists.
He currently tours as a member of The Classical Band.
Micah Yui, piano
Since making her solo recital debut in Canada at the age often and her orchestral debut
two years later, pianist Micah Yui has concertized to critical acclaim throughout North
America, Europe, and Japan. She attended the Juillard School as a student of Bella Davidovich,
the Peabody Conservatory as a student of Leon Fleisher, the University of Toronto, and the
Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto. She is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards
and prizes including a recent top prize at the Frinna Awerbuch International Competition.
Ms. Yui has appeared as soloist with the Montreal Metropolitan Orchestra, the Syracuse
Symphony, Edmonton Symphony, and the Victoria Symphony, among others, and has given solo
recitals in New York, Tokyo, Toronto, Copenhagen, Baltimore and Cincinnati. Her performances
have been broadcast throughout Canada by the Canadian Broadcast Corporation and in Japan
by NI-IK radio.
Her debut CD with the London Symphony Orchestra was named "Record of the Year" by
Stereophile Magazine in 1995. Ms. Yui is on the faculty of Shenandoah University in
Winchester, Virginia, and the Peabody Preparatory.
